What is Yoga?

The word Yoga comes from the ancient Sanskrit language.   Yoga means “union” or “integration” and “discipline”, so the system of Yoga is called an integrating discipline.

Yoga is a system designed to improve the quality of our lives.  It involves a wide range of techniques including body, breath, voice work, diet, meditation, study and reflection.  The origins of yoga are rooted in India’s earliest history and it has long been an integral part of India’s cultural and spiritual life.  In the West, yoga is most often seen as a series of physical poses or postures.

The “viniyoga of yoga” approach is to make yoga relevant to every person and every situation.  This means that poses and practices are adapted to suit individual needs and circumstances.  This style of yoga encourages the use of slow, repetitive movements linked with breathing – a system that is safe for all ages and levels of fitness and it is a powerful tool in developing a student’s mental and physical well-being, clarity and insight.

Some of the benefits of yoga:  It allows the mind, body and spirit to become quiet and work in harmony.  It creates vitality, balance and strength.  It helps to reduce overall stress and tension and improves concentration.  It aids in proper posture and spinal alignment.

Yoga is a powerful tool that can help you achieve a state of optimum health, harmony and well-being.
